Vandevert Ranch News

The extensive web site www.vandevertranch.org is no longer being updated. Recent news is provided here:
Deschutes County has constructed a new roundabout at the intersection of Huntington Road and South Century Boulevard half a mile south of the ranch. Inspired by “Art in Public Places” that graces roundabouts in Bend, a local group of the ranch’s neighbors is proposing to place sculpture of the historical ranch brand, the Hashknife brand, in the center of the roundabout. The eight foot tall sculpture was designed by Shane Bryant, a retired civil engineer. The group is working on approvals from the county and the Oregon Department of Transportation and raising funds to construct and install the sculpture.
On July 16, 2026 the ranch hosted a local book group that enthusiastically selected and read the book Vandevert – The Hundred Year History of a Central Oregon Ranch. The group toured the schoolhouse, caught a views of the renovated Vandevert family homestead, and retired to the teepee for homemade “Vandevert Vanilla” ice cream provided by the group.
This year the ranch welcomed Anna, a thirteen-year-old white mare retired from rodeo work. Anna is adapting herself to the ranch and the other horses. She gets along well with Mateo, our mustang, and with people.
On July 1, a “plump” of eighteen geese floated their orderly way down the Little Deschutes River through the ranch.
After fuel reduction and thinning west of Hashknife Road the ranch installed camouflage screens deep in the forest to obscure lights coming from the far side of the woods.
